From the sub-arid bushland forest and dunes of Madagascar, Xerosicyos danguyi 'String of Coins' has a vining growth habit. Its thick cylindrical stems develop delicate curly tendrils that seek support to climb. Thick, succulent leaves which emerge bright green later develop a silver hue, and are shaped like ancient coins, hence the name. Small chartreuse dioecious flowers (male and female on different plants) can appear in late winter to early spring.

Extremely drought tolerant once established, happy to be watered every 2-3 weeks but will grow much quicker if watered at least occasionally Spring through Summer. Grows best in full sun to partial shade, but slowly acclimate them to full sun as they have been grown in a shade house. Thrives on neglect and is hardy to 25F!

The name for the genus comes from the Greek word 'xeros' meaning "dry" and 'sicyos' meaning cucumber, in reference to this plant being a dry growing member of the cucumber family (Cucurbitaceae). The specific epithet honors the French botanist Paul A. Danguy. Other commons name for it includes Silver Dollar Vine or Dollar Vine.
